Understanding BMI

Everything you need to know about Body Mass Index

What is BMI?

Body Mass Index (BMI) is a numerical value from your weight and height. Developed by Adolphe Quetelet in the 1830s, it's used worldwide as a screening tool for weight status categories.

Formula: BMI = weight (kg) / height (m)2

BMI Categories (WHO)

Underweight< 18.5
Normal weight18.5 - 24.9
Overweight25.0 - 29.9
Obese Class I30.0 - 34.9
Obese Class II35.0 - 39.9
Obese Class III≥ 40.0

BMI Limitations

BMI is useful but limited:

  • Doesn't distinguish muscle from fat
  • May overestimate body fat in athletes
  • May underestimate in elderly
  • Doesn't account for fat distribution
  • Thresholds vary by ethnicity

Always consult a healthcare professional for complete assessment.

Health Risks by BMI

  • Underweight: Malnutrition, osteoporosis, weakened immunity
  • Normal: Lowest chronic disease risk
  • Overweight: Increased heart disease, type 2 diabetes risk
  • Obese: Elevated cardiovascular disease, stroke, cancer risk

Asian BMI Thresholds

WHO recommends different cutoffs for Asian populations:

Underweight< 18.5
Normal18.5 - 22.9
Overweight23.0 - 24.9
Obese≥ 25.0

Beyond BMI

Modern research suggests using multiple metrics:

  • Waist-to-Height Ratio: Better cardiovascular risk predictor
  • Body Fat %: Directly measures adiposity
  • Waist Circumference: Indicates visceral fat
  • Health Score: Our composite metric combining all factors

Frequently Asked Questions

What is BMI and how is it calculated?

BMI (Body Mass Index) is derived from weight and height: BMI = weight(kg) / height(m)2. Imperial: BMI = (weight(lbs) / height(in)2) x 703. At BMIDesk, results update instantly as you type.

What is Health Score?

Health Score is BMIDesk's proprietary 0-100 composite metric. Unlike raw BMI, it factors in your age, gender, and ethnicity to provide a more nuanced health assessment. A score of 80+ indicates excellent health metrics, 60-79 is good, and below 60 suggests areas for improvement.

Is BMI accurate for athletes?

BMI can be misleading for muscular individuals. Muscle is denser than fat, so athletes may have high BMI with low body fat. Use our Body Fat Estimator and Waist-to-Height Ratio tools for more accurate assessment.

How does country comparison work?

We use WHO Global Health Observatory data and national health surveys to show average BMI by country and gender. Select any of 40+ countries to see how your BMI compares to the population average. Data is updated annually from official sources.

Is my data private?

Yes, 100%. All data is stored in your browser's local storage. We never send measurements to any server. Your data stays on your device. Clear it anytime from the Dashboard.

What is BMI Prime?

BMI Prime is your BMI divided by 25 (upper normal limit). A value of 1.0 = upper boundary of normal. Below 1.0 = normal/underweight. Above 1.0 = overweight/obese. A BMI Prime of 1.15 means your BMI is 15% above the upper limit.
